It’s another packed week of music in Minnesota. The Big Wu headlines the Minnesota Zoo “Wild Nights” series Friday, one of the top jazz bassists ever plays the Dakota Wednesday and Thursday, mesmerizing harpist Mikaela Davis plays the Icehouse Courtyard Saturday and Saltydog has a pair of shows at Up Yonder in Grand Marais. It dawns on me every week, when I write this live music column, how lucky Minnesotans are to have such an incredible amount of varied styles of music, which I know extends well beyond my own almost narrow interests — ya know, my love for improvisational and psychedelic music of so many stripes.
But forgive me for rambling — below I’ll give details for Eddie Christmas, Dr. Mambo’s Combo, Ice Horse featuring Mikkel Beckmen, the Jones Gang, the TC Gumbo Jam, Confucisaurus, Kung Fu Hippies, Chase & Ovation, JoJo Green, Saltydog, The Big Wu, Dylan Salfer , Boss Mama and The Jebberhooch, and more.
Chicago’s Ministry hits the Palace Theatre in Saint Paul Tuesday, one of several shows making Jam in the Stream’s weekly list of live music options in Minnesota.
Other highlights include but are not limited to George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, The Garcia Project, and TWINE, which is taking their improvisational magic up to Grand Marais for the holiday weekend.
There are so many options starting tonight in Minnesota for live music, including many free shows in part thanks to the Art-A-Whirl festival in Northeast Minneapolis. Dream of the Wild’s final Psychedelic Sundays edition, this week at Zhora Darling in Minneapolis, brings Confucisaurus, Hunny Bear and Poison Ivy and The People to the stage. Tonight, Charlie Parr plays at a church in Saint Cloud, and Saltydog has a Homegrown show in Duluth.
Dream of the Wild kicking off four Sundays of psychedelic music at The Cabooze tops Jam in the Stream’s weekly live music picks around Minnesota. but there’s a lot of options all over the state, including shows from Cory Wong in Rochester and the great Bob Dylan in Mankato, to name a few high-profile concerts this week.

Minnesota funk/Saltydog and TWINE, which sat in with each other at Hotel Minnesnowta. Less than two weeks later, they were both on Minneapolis stages, seperated by only a few miles Wednesday night. Fans of both bands were able to catch much of both performances and were rewarded for doing so.

Duluth’s SaltyDog released Pepper on June 3. Jam in the Stream reviews the band’s second LP, which features solid song writing, lyrically, as the band has grown to include a pair of guitarists, a hand percussionist and a keyboardist, the latest addition to the band, Jam in the Stream’s verdict: Go buy this album, which includes songs such as “Barfly,” “Yeehaw,” and “Farmer Norm,” among others.

Minneapolis’ Frogleg has a lot in store this year, starting with Saturday’s show at The Hook and Ladder Theater. Don’t miss the show featuring Duluth’s New Salty Dog and Minneapolis-based Apocalypse Girlfriend. Frogleg is working on releasing its acoustic set from February recorded at KJ’s Hideway, “Frogleg UnCroaked.” The band is planning on recording a new album later this year.
As seems always to be the case, there are a lot of amazing live music options around the state of Minnesota this week — with jam legends The Disco Biscuits at The Fillmore at the top of that list.
