It might be a lighter week for psychedelic national touring acts touring through Minnesota, but Austin’s White Denim does bring their blend of rock to the Turf Club on Friday (more details below).
And, as is almost always the case, there is a lot of local music to check out around the state.
UPDATE: I’m particularly excited that the Mahon brothers (Owen and Jacob) from Duluth’s Saltydog will be down in the Twin Cities this week. They were scheduled to be part of the WE Collective at Gluek’s in downtown Minneapolis Thursday at 9:30 p.m. Now, they are planning on getting in town the night before to join TWINE at Bunkers on Wednesday!
Phish remains atop of the improvisational game — and displayed that in Chicago this past weekend.

I’ve been trying to get this weekly post up on Mondays but travel back from Chicago, where I caught Phish’s three-night run — pushed this back to today.
I would have mentioned Only Every Monday, which brings in different guests every week to The Cabooze patio (or moves back inside The Joint when there is bad weather) or Jumpsuit, who is playing Bent Paddle every Monday in Duluth this month — catch the last installment next Monday.

TWINE frontman Will Effertz has a solo gig on the patio at Axels in Roseville today at 6:30 p.m. He’s got a very busy week ahead of him.

Wednesdays are a special night for me personally, as I’ve been taking pictures for TWINE’s Bunkers residency, which started late last year. The band’s lineup has continued to evolve. I’ve also been helping with the lighting on Wednesdays.
All this to say TWINE has been doing special, powerful, improvisational things every Wednesday.
You never know who might show up. … Well, this week, we know, at least, that the Mahon brothers will be there.
Jake Mahon, left, of Saltydog sat in back in March. He and his brother Owen are going to be playing with WE Collective Thursday.
Another residency I have been trying to keep on everyone’s radar here is that of Boss Mama and The Jebberhooch. Boss Mama, aka Colleen Myhre and her husband Jim own the golf club in Mahtowa, which is pert’ near Cloquet and Moose Lake.
They have been hosting music on the weekends (more on that below) and Boss Mama is doing a weekly Wednesday night show outside at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, July 24
Twin Citizen, JoJo Green, The Morning Kings and Jazicality host a night of local music at the Turf Club in Saint Paul. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the music gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
A friend, Joe Hartley, is one of the guitarists in Twin Citizen, somewhat of a proggy band that blends a lot of different styles into their brand of rock. JoJo Green, which features TWINE bassist Scott Yonke, will also have Effertz filling in on guitar for this show.
Effertz then heads over to Gluek’s for his weekly WE Collective show at Gluek’s. As mentioned above, members of Saltydog will be part of the Collective.

The aforementioned White Denim show at the Turf Club is scheduled for 9 p.m., with doors at 8 p.m.
Minnesota Zoo’s Wild Nights series continues this Friday, with Wookiefoot as the headliner on the Weesner Family Amphitheater.
I don’t know much about the other bands Captain Fantastic, Free Fallin and Nice Peper, but the event seems to be combining multiple genres throughout the series.
I loved The Big Wu’s show last month. I think they packed as much as we could have asked for inside the pair of 45-minute sets they were allotted. I also love that the Zoo is keeping the animal exhibits open until 8 p.m., allowing concert goers the chance to see moose, wolves and bears before catching the show.

Will Effertz continues his very busy week at 56 Brewing, where the WE Collective Artist Gathering happens every month. The free event does in fact bring together art vendors and food trucks.
Over at the Uptown VFW, Chilly (aka David Caufman), who hosted a charity fundraiser for his birthday at The Hook and Ladder recently, is hosting a bill with Jon Wayne and The Pain, Push & Turn and DJ Gabe Garcia. The doors and music start at 9 p.m.
Saturday, July 26
Jon Miller, guitarist for TWINE and Feed the Dog, moved his weekly Saturday morning Bluegrass Bingo game to Tuttle’s in Hopkins last week.
The event was originally hosted by The Joint. Miller brings in different players each week as they pull song names out of a hat and give a little history lesson on the music before playing the song. The game is free, and you can win prizes.
TWINE is the main entertainment for Retro Fest at The Hook and Ladder Saturday, with music scheduled for 7 p.m. The event is put on by Retro Bakery.
Up Nort’, Saltydog has a night of music scheduled for The Rugged Spruce Golf Club, with music at 7 p.m.
Sunday, July 27
I’ll mention our two long-standing residencies:
Dr. Mambo’s Combo, one of the longest-standing weekly residencies in the country (since 1987) at Bunkers at 9:30 p.m. So much talent in this band and currently featuring bassist Sonny T (New Power Generation).
Shotgun Ragtime Band, the Grateful Dead cover band, plays show No. 736 at the Driftwood Char Bar in South Minneapolis Sunday, with music starting at 6:30 p.m.
As always, head to Jam in the Stream’s Minnesota muisc calendar, updated weekly, for more information for any of the above shows and more.
