If you’ve been paying close attention to Jam in the Stream, you may have picked up my attempts to to shine a light on psychedelic music from all over the world including my home base of Minnesota.
Hopefully you see that in my weekly live music roundup, which is specifically about shows anywhere in my state.
Read on below for shows from: Glass Beams, Pixies, Kurt Vile and the Violators, Sierra Ferrell, Jumpsuit, TWINE, Saltydog, BZ3 Organ Trio, Boss Mama and the Jebberhooch, Alex Rossi, Mango Jam, ELnO, Apollo Cobra, Mossonello, Barefoot Bluegrass, New Primitives, Buffalo Galaxy, China Rider, Shotgun Ragtime Band, Teague Alexy and the Common Thread, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Dr. Mambo’s Combo.
This week — actually tonight — we have Australian psych instrumental band Glass Beams hitting the First Avenue mainroom.
I’m excited about this band, which more than reminds me of Khruangbin — one of the most widely known psychedelic instrumental bands on the music scene today. A lot of bands remind me of that Texas-based band by virtue of playing psychedelic instrumentals.
Glass Beams go beyond that for me. Their bass-driven Asian-influenced sound is similar to the Thai funk that Khruangbin has been crafting since 2010.
Glass Beams emerged from one of the most prolific psychedelic rock scenes in the world — Australia — in 2021.
The glass masks that Glass Beams wear serve to alter the bands’ aesthetic similar to the way Khruangbin’s Mark Speer and Laura Lee use their black wigs.
I don’t know their music too well, but even if they do sound like Khruangbin, well, I love the Austin psych band, and I can definitely tell the difference between the two bands’ songs.

I’ll also mention Only Every Monday, Geoffrey Fischbein’s weekly collaboration currently on the patio at The Cabooze. He’s got Joe Dunn, Ruby Blu and Jon Miller starting at 6 p.m. It’s free.
