LIVE IN MN: Billy Strings coming in hot in loaded week of music

There’s no rest for the wicked on summer nights in Minnesota when it comes to live music options.

Tonight, Saltydog kicks off a month of Mondays at Bent Paddle Brewing in Duluth at 6 p.m. The free show has Quinne and Jamie Ness opening and the music goes to about 9 p.m.

Duluth’s jam funkers Saltydog return to Bent Paddle in Duluth every Monday in August starting tonight at 6 p.m.

Down in Minneapolis, Only Every Monday has Feed the Dog/TWINE guitarist Jon Miller scheduled, along with former Frogleg vocalist/guitarist Joe Dunn planned for the weekly series on the Cabooze patio. Coordinator Geoffrey Fischbein is also in the lineup, but the rest of the lineup, which kicks off at 6 p.m., was not known before press time.

Also tonight at 6 is Ice Horse at 331 Club. That is washboardist Mikkel Beckmen (Charlie Parr) and Jeff Ray. Roe Family Singers play at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 5

ELOUR’s Tuesday night residency at the White Squirrel Bar in St. Paul starts at 9 p.m., with Christine Hoberg and Littleton.

Wednesday, Aug. 6

Up in Duluth, Feeding Leroy with Shane Nelson play Glensheen’s Concerts at the Pier series from 5 to 8 p.m.

Jon Miller will be leading TWINE’s weekly residency this week, as Will Effertz is out west climbing mountains. Dunn will be sitting in.

Boss Mama’s weekly residency at The Rugged Spruce Golf Club in Mahtowa is at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 9

Miller and Dunn will also lead the WE Collective this week at Gluek’s.

Jon Miller will be leading TWINE and WE Collective this week at Bunkers and Gluek’s.

Friday, Aug. 8

Dr. Mambo’s Combo will be tributing funk legends Sly and the Family Stone and Rufus and Chaka Khan at The Hook and Ladder Theater. The music starts at 7 p.m.

Jon Sullivan sat in with TWINE last week, along with keyboardist Sevans Henderson of The Red Clay Strays. Catch Sullivan and his full band and The Histronic in support at Icehouse Friday.

Jon Sullivan Band with The Histronic play Icehouse on Eat Street, with the doors at 6 p.m. but show at 8 p.m. Icehouse continues to put out some of the finest food of any music venue in the state, so come early.

Shoeless Revolution plays Bunkers in North Loop with the customary 9:30 p.m. start.

The first of two days of the Lakeside Guitar Festival at Saint Paul’s Historic Como Lakeside Pavilion is limited to the Promenade Stage, with Hemma from 6 to 6:45 p.m., Ehekatl Arizmendi from 7 to 7:45 p.m., Jeff Ray from 7:45 tp 8:10 p.m. and Mason Jennings from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. These sets are all free. The event is curated by Molly Maher and Jam in the Stream friend Todd Clouser .

Cloud Cult headlines Minnesota’s Zoo’s Wild Nights series, with Sweet and Tender Hooligans, DJ Jake Judh and Alexis Rose, with the music starting at 6 p.m.

Up in Grand Marais, a pair of Minneapolis bands make their way for a pair of shows on a pair of nights. JoJo Green plays Up Yonder and Shotgun Ragtime Band hits the Gunflint Tavern rooftop. Both shows are at 8 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 9

Billy Strings returns to Minneapolis, with his biggest show here yet, just a week after sitting in with Dead & Company at Golden Gate Park to mark 60 years since the Grateful Dead formed. His show starts at 7:30 p.m.

There are a pair of free unofficial pre- and post shows downtown with Buffalo Galaxy playing at Kieran’s Pub at 4 p.m., and one ticketed after party at The Hook and Ladder in South Minneapolis.

Gluek’s actually has both pre- and post-show music starting at 4:30 p.m., with WE Collective, The Here Afters featuring Terry V and EFMI.

Meanwhile, The Hook and Ladder is hosting its own Grateful Dead celebreation with the Built to Last Festival featuring two sets of Bertha (Grateful Drag) “Under The Canopy,” the Built to Last All Stars (including Mark Joseph, Andy Miller and Terry VanDeWalker of The Big Wu, Nicholas David, Lee Leonard, Annie Hicks and Leif Rasmussen of Jones Gang, Eddie Juntunen of White Iron Band, and others performing JGB and Bigfoot County playing an acoustic set starting at 5 p.m.

The second day of the free Lakeside Guitar Festival at Como Lakeside Pavilion in Saint Paul has multiple stages and concludes with a ticketed show performance of The Band’s Last Waltz at 6 p.m. on the Waterfall Stage.

The music kicks off on the Grand Lawn with a “Strum Along/Sing a Song” led by Kith + Kin at 11 a.m. Then at Promenade, El Diablo Pedal Swap is from noon to 1 p.m. At the Promenade Stage, Cassandra Johnson is from noon to 12:45 p.m., The Neighborhood Quartet is from 1 to 1:45 p.m., Joe and Vicki Price play from 2 to 2:45 p.m. and Mark Whitfield’s set is from 3 to 4 p.m.

At the Cafe Stage inside Dock & Paddle, The Daily Norm performs at 11: 15 a.m., Liz DeYo at 12:15 p.m., LaPlant Road at 1:15 p.m. and Duo CORDA at 2:15 p.m.

At the Waterfall Stage, Paul Metzger Improvised Modern Banjo is at 11 a.m., Improv Waterfall Orchestra with Al Church is from noon to 3 p.m., and the gates close at 4:15 p.m.

Lastly, JoJo Green and Shotgun Ragtime Band play their Grand Marais sets at Up Yonder and Gunflint Tavern, respectively, at 8 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 10

Dr. Mambo’s Combo plays their legendary funk residency at Bunkers starting at 9:30 p.m. The Combo started this residency back in 1987.

Shotgun Ragtime Band, south Minneapolis Grateful Dead commune, will have to high-tail it back to South Minneapolis’ Driftwood, as the music kicks off at 6:30 p.m. This show is No. 738 in the series.
