The legendary Herbie Hancock tops this week’s roundup of live music around Minnesota.
But there are excellent options this week around the state from both national touring bands, such as Magoo, Big Gigantic and Kent Burnside, and local artists of note.
As a nod to the highly influential Hancock in town, I’ll mention here two jazz shows in Hunny Bear, which plays 331 Club Thursday and the Old Town Tuesday Night Jam at Whitey’s Old Fashioned Saloon.
But also read below for shows regarding TWINE, WE Collective, TH3, Beneath Green, Joe Dunn, Depererate Electric, Hiahli, Matcha Fever, Shoeless Revolution, Buffalo Galaxy, Greater Goods, The Menagerie, Chase and Ovation, People Brothers Band, Bruce Woodman, Dr. Mambo’s Combo and Shotgun Ragtime Band.

Herbie Hancock is 85 years old, but the man still has it. And his influence on modern music can’t be overstated.
I’m very stoked to have scored a front-row seat for Wednesday’s show at Orpheum Theatre. The show starts at 7 p.m.
TWINE bassist Scott Yonke always has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Then, of course, I will high-tail it over to Bunkers for TWINE’s weekly residency show.
The jams these guys keep putting down in every set (they play three sets every week) have been nothing short of amazing.

I mentioned Hunny Bear above. If you love 70s era jazz fusion, you must catch these guys, which have done their homework and pay homage to the likes of Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, etc., with fresh, improvisational takes. THC and Beneath Green are also on the bill at 331 Club, and the show kicks off at 9:30 p.m.
Montana’s Desperate Electric is billed as a “soul-pop power disco band” with locals support from Hiahli, which blends rock and hip hop, and Matcha Fever, which includes Chase & Ovation guitarist Toni Lee and TWINE percussionist Kale Winship. The band reimagines 80s funk and pop and the Minneapolis Sound.
Guitarist Tony Li has a couple of gigs this week with both Matcha Fever and Chase and Ovation.
