Live in MN: French duo Polo & Pan top this week's roundup

September 23, 2025 in live events, blog

If you, like me, are a little obsessed with French-produced psychedelic music, you might want to check out Polo & Pan tonight at The Palace Theatre in Saint Paul. The show starts at 8 p.m.

This electronic duo (Paul Armand-Delille and Alexandre Grynszpan) has strong Daft Punk vibes. I mean, check out the song “Laszlo.” But the band is currently touring the U.S. in support of their latest LP 22:22.

They’ve been described as a blend of tropical-inspired house-electronic music and I think that’s pretty on point.

But Minnesota has many live music options this week, as is almost always the case.

Read on below for options include Deltron 3030, the BZ3 Organ Trio, TWINE, Ice Horse, the WE Collective including three fourths of Feed the Dog, Global Jazz Collegium, Galactic Cowboy Orchestra, East Nash Grass, Boats and Bluegrass (featuring the likes of Saltydog, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, Mountain Grass Unit, Chicken Wire Empire, Feeding Leroy, Sierra Hull and Feed the Dog, Triple Fiddle, Joseph Huber), The Californias Honeydrops, EFMI, a Dylan & The Dead tribute featuring China Rider and Mind Out of Time, Kung Fu Hippies, Shotgun Ragtime Band and Dr. Mambo’s Combo.

Wednesday, Sept 24

Fans of 90s hip hop might wanna mosey over to Uptown Theater for Hieroglyphics’ Deltron 3030. The doors are at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.

Brian Ziemniak’s BZ3 Organ Trio has its monthly gig at Schooner Tavern in South Minneapolis at 7 p.m. Geoff Lecrone will be filling in on guitar as David Feily recovers from a back injury. Get well soon, David!

Over on Eat Street, Ice Horse, featuring washboardist Mikkel Beckmen, will be playing Icehouse’s Starlight Room at 6 p.m.

I always mention TWINE here every week. I take pictures for the band (almost) every Wednesday at Bunkers. It’s a great honor working with this exceedingly talented group of rock improvisors. They always rise to the occasion of playing at this legendary independent house of live music.

TWINE keeps it fresh every Wednesday aka TWINEsday at Bunkers in North Loop.

Thursday, Sept. 25

It’s a busy night of music, both in the Cities and down south in Winona.

For starters, Boats & Bluegrass kicks off on this night. As usual, the riverside festival always has a loaded lineup. I won’t mention all the bands in this column — just the sets I personally wouldn’t miss were I lucky enough to be there this weekend. But all of the bands that play this festival are madly talented — so I’m just speaking to my own musical taste.

On Thursday, the likes of Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, Saltydog and High and Rising perform. You’ll have to head to my calendar for a link to the fest website where you can find the schedule.

Duluth’s Saltydog has the duty of closing out Boats & Bluegrass’ Thursday lineup with a late night set down in Winona.

Also Thursday, WE Collective will involve three of the four members of Feed the Dog. That includes Will Effertz’ TWINE bandmate Jon Miller, bassist Nick Spielman and drummer Erik Juvonen. The music starts at 9:30 p.m.

Fans of jazz fusion should head over to The Hook and Ladder Theater “campus.” The main theater is hosting the Global Jazz Collegium as it performs A Tribute to Jazz Rock Fusion of the 1970s and Today starting at 8 p.m. But also, The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra and Ovrfrwrd play at the Zen Arcade starting at 7:30 p.m.

Last but not least, East Nash Grass performs at the Turf Club in Saint Paul for an 8 p.m. show.

Friday, Sept. 26

The California Honeydrops play a gig at Dinkytown’s Varsity Theater at 8 p.m.

Shrimp Olympics, along with Grand Lilac and True Lust have a gig at 331 Club in Northeast Minneapolis, with music starting at 10 p.m. They were listed third in the trio, so not exactly sure when they will be playing. It’s hard to nail down that Shrimp Olympics sound, but I’ll say this impressive Minneapolis band definitely is influenced by Ween, they have a punk edge and fuck with that modern psychedelic sound.

Boats and Bluegrass’s Friday lineup at the Prairie Island Campground in Winona includes (not is not limited to) Triple Fiddle, East Nash Grass, Chicken Wire Empire, Texas Toast, Mountain Grass Unit and Joseph Huber.

Saturday, Sept. 27

Local jammers EFMI has a show at the White Squirrel Bar in Saint Paul at 9 p.m.

The Kung Fu Hippies play Bunkers in North Loop at 9:30 p.m.

Mind Out of Time and China Rider perform at tribute to Dylan & The Dead at Turf Club at 8 p.m.

The Saturday Boats and Bluegrass lineup includes (but is not limited to) Feeding Leroy, Luke Fallen, Sierra Hull, Feed the Dog, Mike and Mikkel, and Chicken Wire Empire performing a late-night set titled “Very Garcia.”

Sunday, Sept. 28

Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson plays the Uptown Theater at 7 p.m.

Shotgun Ragtime Band plays the Driftwood in South Minneapolis every Sunday, with Phine and Friends starting at 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Mambo’s Combo plays Bunkers every Sunday at 9:30 p.m.
