Live in MN: David Byrne, Charlie Hunter and Sam Grisman visit

November 03, 2025 in live events, blog

There’s star power in town this week — with David Byrne playing a pair of shows at the Orpheum.

But we also have Sam Grisman in Minneapolis, performing the songs of his father and Jerry Garcia, as well as The Del McCoury Band and Charlie Hunter.

Local performers include: Only Every Monday, TWINE, Hunny Bear, Outta Coentro, Funk N Spuds, WE Collective, Jimbo’s Forever Young, Pert Near Sandstone, People Brothers Band, Texas Toast, Shotgun Ragtime Band and Dr. Mambo’s Combo.

Monday, Nov. 3

Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne plays the first of two shows at the Orpheum, with music starting at 8 p.m. As of press time, there were a few face value tickets available, but they were still quite pricey — upwards of $300.

Only Every Monday recently moved indoors to the newly remodeled Red Room space inside The Cabooze, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m., and music starting at 6 p.m. This week, host Geoffrey Fischbein kicks things off, followed by Demitri Rallis at 7 p.m. and Soundshapes at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 4

David Byrne’s second show at the Orpheum is sold out, but after market tickets were available, though quite pricey through the Ticketmaster resale marketplace. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Graydon Peterson’s Old Town Tuesday Night Jam at Whitey’s Old Town Saloon in Northeast Minneapolis is a solid option for improvisational music seekers every Tuesday. The music starts at 10 p.m. and goes until 1 a.m., and draws players from all around in the open format.

Wednesday, Nov. 5

TWINE’s Bunkers residency keeps getting better and better, digging deeper with new originals and covers every week that always seem to find improvisational bliss in each of three sets.

These guys have the experience and chops to pull off difficult and special moments — and I’m not just saying that because I run lights and take pictures for them. It’s a special show every week at Bunkers.

Sam Grisman, son of David “Dawg” Grisman, is keeping the music that his father and Jerry Garcia wrote alive. He’s got a gig at the Dakota this week, with music starting at 7 p.m.

Hunny Bear, a funky jazz fusion quartet, closes out its residency at the White Squirrel Bar with Outta Coentro and Funk N Spuds. There’s no cover, and they go on second, after Brazilian funk fusion band Outta Coentro and before Funk N Spuds. The music starts at 9 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 6

The Del McCoury Band plays Parkway Theater in South Minneapolis. The all ages show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available.

TWINE frontman Will Effertz plays with his WE Collective at Gluek’s on Thursday nights. The music is free and starts at 9:30 p.m.

JayBee and The Routine’s long-time residency at Bunkers every Thursday is worth mentioning. The music starts at 9:30 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 7
