Dead Man Winter to play Boundary Waters benefit July 4

June 22, 2025 in live events, blog

Pair of Trampled by Turtles side projects play day before and after annual Bayfront show; LazyLightning420 pays tribute to grateful dead’s Wall of Sound July 6

Dead Man Winter is headlining a Boundary Waters benefit show and LazyLightning420 will celebrate the Grateful Dead’s Wall of Sound as Trampled by Turtles makes their annual return to Duluth’s Bayfront Festival Park (ticket link) July 5.

Dead Man Winter, fronted by Trampled frontman Dave Simonett, along with Boxcar are putting on a fundraiser at Bent Paddle Brewing the day before (July 4) Trampled plays its Saturday show at Bayfront. The event starts at noon, with Boxcar scheduled for 3 p.m. and Dead Man Winter at 5 p.m.

It’s a free show, but event organizers, which include Redfeather Outdoors, onX Fish and onX Hunt, Yakima, Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters, the band and venue, suggest a $20 donation. Of course, if you are able to be more generous, it would be quite welcome.

The Boundary Waters are under attack by the Trump Administration and Rep. Pete Stauber. Read my recent editorial here. Scientists say mining in the BWCAW watershed would create a high risk of irreparable damage to sensitive lakes and streams. This would chiefly benefit a foreign mining company.

All proceeds of this fundraiser go to Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters.

Several members of Trampled by Turtles have journeyed into the million-plus-acres Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, including Simonett, mandolinist Erik Berry and “Banjo” Dave Carroll.

Check out this piece I wrote on Simonett back in September 2022, back when I was assistant editor at Outdoor News.

Bent Paddle is releasing a special beer for the occasion, Frothy Moose, an ultra-light American Lager, perhaps a nod to ultra-light backcountry travel. The beer is a collaboration with the brewery and Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters, a group that is dedicated to protecting the nation’s most-visited federal wilderness area from the threats of sulfide-ore copper mining.

There’s also a raffle for a $4,800 canoe package, including a Northwind canoe, Yakima canoe rack and a pair of Redfeather bent shaft canoe paddles.

There will be speakers advocating for protecting the BWCAW, vendors, a food truck and lawn games.

LazyLightning420 and embalmingEva pay tribute to Wall of Sound

Head over to Jade Fountain If you’re still in Duluth Sunday night, where LazyLightning420 and embalmingEva will be paying tribute to the Grateful Dead’s Wall of Sound, which was used by the Dead in 1974 and designed by the band’s audio engineer Owsley “Bear” Stanley.

“We couldn’t do this without paying our respects to Seastones, the far-ahead-of-its-time synth duo of Ned Lagin and Phil Lesh,” Berry wrote in a Facebook post. “I’m thrilled that my personal favorite synth duo and Palomino grant runner ups embalmingEva will call attention to this moment in time with their own original piece composed specifically for this event!”

LL420, a string Dead cover band, has been playing shows for about a decade now and includes Berry, Duluth’s Marc Gartman and Teague Alexy.
