Azymuth, the Brazilian samba funk legends, showed they are far more than a nostalgia act 50 years into their existence Friday.
The trio, down to one original member in bassist Alex Malheiros, displayed an incredible amount of psychedelic energy inherent in the bands’ 30-plus LP career output at their tour opener at Amsterdam Bar and Hall in Saint Paul, Minn.
It is safe to say that the band’s keyboardist Kiko Continentino, who took over on keys in 2015 after the passing of Jose Roberto Bertrami, provides an incredible spark. Ivan Conti, the band’s original drummer, remained a member of the band until he passed away in 2023.
The band drew from their their deep catalog and also played some new material off their just-released LP Marca Passo. They are touring under the Jazz is Dead label put together by Ali Shaheed Mohammad of A Tribe Called Quest and producer Adrian Younge.
Jazz is Dead granted photo credentials to Jam in the Stream.
The band has seven more dates that hit the Upper Midwest, Canada and New York, starting with Milwaukee’s Shank Hall tonight, but also Chicago, Grand Rapids, Mich., Toronto and New York, to name a few. Click here for their full tour schedule.
