It’s Tuesday night, and I write here from the Zeitgeist Atrium in Duluth, high off the improvisational fumes that Saltydog put down last night at Bent Paddle.
I’m late here with my weekly Minnesota music roundup so let me quickly say that we have one of the baddest touring mandolinists in Sierra Hull playing out in Hopkins Friday.
But there’s a lot of local talent tonight, as I’m about to take in Gavin St. Clair leading a quartet at Zeitgeist. St. Clair, Saltydog’s keyboardist, is playing a guitar right now, and it’s not too late to catch him this week, either in Duluth of down in Minneapolis. Read on below.
Tuesday, Feb. 10
Creekbed Carter Hogan, a trans folk musician who recently opened for Big Richard at the Turf Club, has a set at 331 Club in Northeast Minneapolis from 6 to 8 p.m.
Graydon Peterson’s Old Town Tuesday Night Jam kicks off at Whitey’s Old Town Saloon in Northeast Minneapolis at 10 p.m.
Up in Duluth, Saltydog keyboardist Gavin St. Clair continues his Tuesday night residency this month at Zeitgeist’s Atrium in downtown Duluth. St. Clair is coming in off a stellar night with Saltydog at Bent Paddle Brewing’s Cosmic Lounge stage, that saw the band take “Done and Done” past the 20-minute mark.
St. Clair moves to Sir Benedict’s Tavern on the Lake, where he hosts an open mic from 7 to 10 p.m.
Also in Duluth, Bruce Woodman’s jam at Carmody Irish Pub goes from 8 p.m. to 11 — though it frequently goes well past that at the bar that closes at 2 a.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 11
Poliça’s Practice As A Show Residency at Icehouse on Eat Street resumes with music at 8 p.m. (Doors at 6 p.m.)
Duluth’s Teague Alexy has a set at the 331 Club in Northeast Minneapolis starting at 9:30 p.m. Jacob Mahon will be joining Alexy. The music will go on until 12:30 a.m., I’m told.
TWINE will be joined by St. Clair on the keys at their weekly Bunkers show that kicks off at 9:30 p.m. in North Loop.
Thursday, Feb. 12
St. Clair will be sticking around in Minneapolis to join Will Effertz at his weekly WE Collective residency at Gluek’s. The music starts at 9:30 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 13
As mentioned above, Hull headlines a bill at the Hopkins Center for Arts with an 8 p.m. start. Indie folk duo The Milk Carton Kids open for Hull.
The Brothers Almanac, a local Allman Brothers tribute band, headlines First Avenue with an 8 p.m. start. Wisconsin’s funky People Brothers Band opens up the affair.
Steely Dane hits Dakota in downtown Minneapolis for a pair of shows Friday night, the first at 6:30 p.m. and hte second at 9 p.m. The 14-piece Steely Dan tribute is from Dane County, Wisconsin.
Saturday, Feb. 14
Prince tribute Chase & Ovation returns to Bunkers with a 9:30 p.m. start.
Sunday, Feb. 15
Arkansauce, a bluegrass quartet from northwest Arkansas, share a bill with Milwaukee bluegrass band Chicken Wire Empire at Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis with a 7:30 p.m. start.
Shotgun Ragtime Band plays show No. 765 at the Driftwood in South Minneapolis, with Phine and Friends kicking things off at 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Mambo’s Combo fans the flame of their long-standing Bunkers residency, with music starting at 9:30 p.m.
