Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, one of the hottest improvisational rock bands in the land, released an extensive tour itinerary for September and October this week.
The band had already scheduled a few festival appearances on the East Coast and Vegas’ Bender Jamboree in the same time frame. Here is the band’s official tour dates page, including summer and fall dates and ticket links and alerts.
The band added early September dates to a shorter run of triple-billed summer shows with jamgrass mainstays Railroad Earth and Yonder Mountain String Band.
But the bulk of the tour hits the Northeast and Southeast before closing out with a trio of Midwest shows that takes the quartet to Bloomington, Ind., Minneapolis’ First Avenue and Milwaukee’s Turner Hall Ballroom.
There are another seven yet-to-be-announced dates, shaded out on the promotional fall tour poster for Sept. 7, 18, 19, 20, Oct. 4 and Nov. 7 and 8. Those last two are sandwiched by a pair of Florida festival appearances at legendary Suwannee Hulaween and Sunshine Hootenanny.
DDCC has seen their star rise in recent years for a number of reasons. The band has brought a different yet cosmically familiar feel to jam rock. The band is not quite jamgrass, not quite country, but all the way psychedelic. There is Honky Tonk influence in their sound that is bound via keys, a drum kit, a bass that is sometimes-electric, sometimes-upright, and Donato’s ‘62 Sea Foam Green Fender Strat.
There is no band improvising quite like Cosmic Country. It’s a band that generates and circulates dusty energy, making many jams rumble like a steam-powered locomotive.
While tickets are already on sale for the additional Railroad/Yonder dates in Cary, N.C., Richmond, Va., and Fairport, N.Y., the bulk of shows go on sale today with the first round of pre-sales through Donato’s own Cosmic Country Club fan club. Membership is free (sign up here). Venue pre-sales are Thursday at 10 a.m., and the general sale is Friday at 10 a.m.
Donato is truly a kind and generous soul. He graciously granted me photo credentials for his own weekend fest at The Caverns in Tennessee in April, one of the coolest experiences I’ve had since starting Jam in the Stream more than two years ago.
